Michael grew up in Christchurch, attending St Andrew's College from 2007-2013. He started drumming at the age of 10. During his time at St Andrew's College, Michael enjoyed multiple Juvenile national titles culminating in the highlight of his time at the College, which was winning the Juvenile World Pipe Band Championships in 2013 with the St Andrew’s College Pipe Band.

Currently he is the leading drummer of the Canterbury Caledonian Society Grade One Pipe Band having won many national titles and drumming titles both as a playing member and as the leading drummer. He’s also been to the World Championships with Canterbury five times, achieving numerous top 12 finishes.
