Friday 13 June 2025

Dear Parents and Caregivers

Kia ora koutou.

I am always so impressed to see young people taking up challenges to extend and grow themselves. Public speaking is often something we can fear and avoid. Yet it is only by taking up such opportunities that we really grow, learn, and realise that our fears can be illusions. Growth demands courage and developing a positive mindset.

These positive qualities were on display at our annual Festival of the Spoken Word, held on Tuesday evening. This event included the winners of the Year 9 (Charlotte Currie) and Year 10 (Thomas Ambury), the Year 11 and Year 12 finalists for Prepared speeches, and Senior Impromptu speakers. I was so very proud of all the speakers, and the passion and unique way each speech was delivered. Many were very clever and entertaining, such as Joshua Adams’ (Year 13) talk on his favourite letter. Congratulations to the overall senior winner, Hannah Papali'i Taimalelagi Malietoa (Year 12).

The annual St Andrew’s College AGM was hosted on Thursday evening, which included the presentation of the confirmed 2024 Annual Report. Thank you to all the people who attended this event, at which our Board Chair Felicity Odlin and Deputy Chair Nick Letham, were reconfirmed by the Board of Governors for another year. You can access the 2024 Annual Report by clicking here.

This week I was delighted to present to our Director of Boarding, Matt Parr, an award from the New Zealand Boarding Schools Association (NZBSA) for Outstanding Service. This award recognises Matt’s 15 years of service in boarding, including the last seven years at St Andrew’s College in charge of boarding. This award especially celebrates both his significant contributions to the association, representing 103 boarding schools across New Zealand, and his positive impact on our boarding community. You can read his Award Citation by clicking here.

Later this afternoon I look forward to meeting another gathering of Old Collegians with our 30 Years On Reunion function. My wife Judi and I always find these such a great opportunity, not only to meet new people, but also to hear their stories and experiences of the College. I am always so impressed by their positive connections with school friends, and their genuine love towards the College. Clearly the St Andrew’s alumni network is a truly valuable aspect of what it means to be part of the StAC community.

Also, this evening is our annual Ballet Winter Showcase, which Judi and I are also looking forward to attending. I have heard so many positive comments about our Ballet Academy Artistic Director, Dr Carolyn Cairns, and the wonderful programme she oversees at St Andrew’s. We are truly very fortunate to have her leading this important offering at the College.

Over this weekend, in addition to our usual range of sports games, our Year 11 students will be enjoying their Semi-formal, with the theme ‘Under the Stars,’ hosted at the Riccarton Raceway. Then, on Sunday, we have our Term 2 Preparatory School chapel service.

Ngā mihi mahana

RENOVATION AND STRENGTHENING WORK

From next Monday, 16 June, the College will be commencing work on the Religious Education (RE) block in the Secondary School campus. This is the building adjacent to Strowan House and the front field. This work will involve renovation and strengthening, along with classroom expansions, and will take approximately 6–7 months to complete.

A range of controls will be placed directly outside the RE block to keep students and staff safe from the activity occurring within. It is important to note, the Papanui Road entrance will be used as the main road into the construction site. We will monitor vehicle movements onsite to ensure safety is maintained.

On Papanui Road there will also be a full traffic management system set up, to manage the influx of vehicles entering the campus. Please be mindful of the additional congestion this may cause.

WELL-BEING BLOG: GOAL SETTING USING WOOP FRAMEWORK

An important part of our well-being lies in the pursuit of meaningful goals. There’s something deeply rewarding about making progress and seeing our efforts pay off. At St Andrew’s, all students are currently using WOOP, an evidence-based goal-setting framework, to set a well-being and academic goal. In this blog post, Head of Well-being, Kerry Larby, explains how WOOP empowers students to become more agentic and resilient in their thinking as they strive toward their aspirations.

MATARIKI ASSEMBLY

Matariki hunga nui – Matariki, the gatherer of people.

Kua haehae ngā hihi o Matariki – The rays of Matariki are spread.

A special assembly was held today to acknowledge the significance of Matariki and reflect on its meaning together as a kura, ahead of next Friday’s public holiday. Matariki, the Māori New Year, is a special time in Aotearoa that marks the rising of the Matariki star cluster. It is a season of remembrance, celebration, and planning for the future. Across the country, communities gather to honour those who have passed, share kai, and enjoy music, storytelling, and cultural performances. It’s a time to reflect on our learning journey, reconnect with whānau, and set goals for the year ahead.

The College will be marking Matariki next week with a range of engaging activities from Pre-school to Secondary School.

FESTIVAL OF THE SPOKEN WORD

The Festival of the Spoken Word, hosted by the English Department, was held in the Green Library and Innovation Centre on Tuesday evening. This annual event is a showcase of the talented speakers at St Andrew’s College. The evening included a fantastic range of speeches on an array of topics, impressing both the audience and judges alike. Charlotte Currie (Year 9) and Thomas Ambury (Year 10) delivered their speeches after winning the Junior finals two weeks ago.

  • Year 11 Prepared Speech finalists: Fletcher Cairns, Hanxi (Cicy) Chen, RuoLin (Lauren) Li – winner;
  • Senior Prepared Speech finalists: Charlotte Galvan, Matthew Glass, and Hannah Papali’i Taimalelagi Malietoa – winner (all Year 12);

  • Overall Best Speaker of the night and winner of the Mark Ellerm Memorial Cup: Hannah Papali’i Taimalelagi Malietoa (Year 12).

Thank you to our judges for the evening, Head of English at Avonside Girls’ High School, Laura Borrowdale, and Harry Waddington (OC 2021), and our Year 13 Cultural Captains Miu Kim and Mookmanee (Mookee) Lee who were the comperes for the evening.

YEAR 12 TRAVEL AND TOURISM TRIP

Last Wednesday, 34 Year 12 Travel and Tourism students visited the West Coast to explore various aspects of the tourism industry, including different work roles and the region’s rich natural and cultural attractions. During the trip, students gathered insights into careers in tourism, with a special focus on transportation and customer service. A couple of engaging presenters shared their experiences working in the industry, offering students a real-world perspective. Despite the weather, the group ventured into the historic cave where explorers Thomas Brunner and Kehu once found shelter during their 1847 expedition. Students also enjoyed visiting Constant Bay, once a vital port during the gold rush era. At Tauranga Bay, they saw seals and viewed the coastal landscape. A highlight of the trip was visiting the iconic Pancake Rocks at Punakaiki. Students were fascinated by the unique limestone formations and the powerful blowholes, which offered a spectacular display of nature’s force.

POETRY IN ACTION

On Thursday, touring Australian group ‘Poetry in Action’ performed two shows for English students in the Centennial Chapel. The Period 4 performance was ‘Words of War,’ a show that explored the context, craft, and impact of World War I poetry. Students attending the Period 5 performance experienced ‘Riots and Revolutions,’ a show focussed on how persuasive language can bring about global change. Both shows were selected to support and enrich students’ learning in their English programmes.

250613 ESOL

YEAR 9 ESOL TRIP

On Monday, the Year 9 ESOL class went into the city to discover some important local sites. This was an opportunity for students to visit some of the places they have been studying in class when learning about New Zealand. After exploring Riverside Market, the group took the tram around the city. The commentary was extensive, and it was particularly interesting to hear about all the new places that have been developed since the earthquakes. The students learnt a lot about the new regulations for building in the city, for example, 28 metres is the maximum height for any new buildings. The last part of the trip was spent in Tūranga, the Christchurch Library. Although the weather was wet and cold, the students enjoyed visiting new places and developing an understanding of the changing face of the city.

HOOP IT UP

Last Saturday, the Commodore Hotel hosted the bi-annual Hoop It Up gala dinner. This was an incredible night of community connection, entertaining banter, and support for the St Andrew’s College basketball programme, StACHoops.

A special thank you to the StAC Basketball Fundraising Committee – past parent Vicki Farrant, Charlotte Whittaker (OC 2018), Lauren Whittaker (OC 2023), Bryan Stronach (OC 1998) and Joe Moody as speakers, Burton Shipley (OC 1969), the generous sponsors and donors, and all those who attended to make the event a success.

MINECRAFT EDUCATION

On Tuesday, a group of 16 Year 7–8 students attended the Redzone Recovery Minecraft Education Build Challenge at the Riccarton Community Centre. Students explored environmental recovery initiatives and shared their visions for the untouched red zones. Teams engaged in a 40-minute building session, split into two 20-minute halves. Overall, the Redzone Recovery Minecraft Education Build Challenge was a memorable experience that highlighted the importance of environmental recovery and showcased the students’ creativity and teamwork.

PRE-SCHOOL SCIENCE EXCURSION

As part of the Pre-school children’s exploration into the science of weather, a group of tamariki were invited to visit the Science Department in the Senior College for a science lesson about rainbows. Tamariki learnt about the science behind how a rainbow is made, using light boxes and prisms to make their own rainbows, a colour wheel to turn a rainbow back into white light, and even ‘fizzy rainbows’ with baking soda and vinegar.

Sports Roundup

RUGBY
The 1st XV hosted Nelson College for their match against the defending Miles Toyota Premiership Champions. With a strong southerly prevailing, the team struggled to execute, which put the group under early pressure. Nelson College scored a converted try early, followed by a penalty goal. A series of errors then allowed Nelson to capitalise twice more, and after 20 minutes, St Andrew’s was trailing 0–22.

The forwards then set a positive platform with direct running to set up the first try by Isaac Matulewicz (Year 13), converted by Fynn Harris (Year 13). This built momentum, but unfortunately a second try from Azaniah Roebeck (Year 13) was disallowed. Heading into the break 7–22 down, the team was confident with the wind now at their backs. In the 48th minute, the hard-running Aza Roebeck hit a short ball on the line to score a fantastic try. Caleb Collins-Polata (Year 12) then showed great determination to get over the line in quick succession to close the margin. Fynn Harris continued his strong kicking performance to convert both tries, bringing the score to 21–22. Nelson was denied by some robust St Andrew’s defence. In the final stages of the game, a loose high tackle from Nelson College gave Fynn Harris an opportunity to put St Andrew’s in the lead for the first time in the match. Fynn hit the ball well from 40 metres out to give St Andrew’s the lead, 24–22. This was a formidable come-from-behind victory for St Andrew’s against a talented Nelson College team. A final congratulations to four newly capped players (all Year 12 students), Lachie Mitchell, Caleb Collins-Polata, Jock Sidey, and Seymour Stowers-Smith, who have represented our College with pride so far this season.

BASKETBALL
On Tuesday evening, St Andrew’s hosted its second basketball double-header of the season. The first game saw the Senior Girls’ team face St Margaret's College, building a double-digit first quarter lead. Ava Jones (Year 12) led the way with 35 points, whilst Maniah Taefu (Year 11) and Holly Radford (Year 10) combined for another 35 points, in a 110–26 win.

The Senior Boys’ team took on a strong St Thomas of Canterbury College in the second game of the night. Bronson Curtis (Year 13) spearheaded offence whilst Oliver Kirk (Year 11) and Rylan Cliff (Year 13) worked hard on the defensive side. In the end, St Thomas took a close win, 83–80.

FOOTBALL
The Boys’ 1st XI team delivered a commanding 5–0 win over Burnside High School last Wednesday. Controlling the match from the start, they scored early, and continued to build momentum. With a rock-solid defence ensuring a clean sheet, St Andrew’s sealed the match in style.

Despite a 6–0 defeat to Cashmere High School, our Girls’ 1st XI showed resilience. Holding their opponents to just 0–1 at halftime, they defended bravely before Cashmere’s second-half surge widened the gap.

HOCKEY
The Girls’ 1st XI team went down 1–3 to Rangi Ruru Girls’ School after a slow start. Rangi scored three early goals, but St Andrew’s responded well in the second half with a goal from Sophia Voice (Year 13). The team continues to build and work on new combinations as the season progresses.

NETBALL
Saturday’s netball game against Kereru C proved to be a tough contest, as expected from the top-of-the-table team featuring three Old Collegians from the 2024 St Andrew’s College A squad. Despite a determined effort, the team faced an early setback, trailing by 12 goals at half-time. However, a strong third quarter narrowed the gap back to seven goals. Although they fought hard until the final whistle, Kereru C maintained their edge, securing a 54–39 victory.

In Wednesday’s SuperNet game against Rangi Ruru Girls’ School, it was a tight contest from the outset, with Rangi edging ahead by just one goal at the end of the first quarter. However, St Andrew’s showed determination, mounting a strong comeback in the second quarter to score nine goals to their one. From there, they maintained momentum and control of the game, securing a 29–15 victory.

THE BIG SING

Both school choirs, Staccoro and Stacchorus, represented St Andrew’s with distinction at The Big Sing Regional Competition held last Friday at the Town Hall. Staccoro, our Senior choir, made up of students from Years 11–13, delivered a captivating recital. A highlight was the moving rendition of Christchurch composer Rosa Elliott’s Ojalá, which featured instrumental contributions from Ary Son (Year 11) and Edward Park (Year 9). The recital earned Staccoro the award for Best Mixed Choir.

Our Junior choir, Stacchorus, comprising Year 9–10 students, also gave a memorable performance. For many of these students, it was their first time performing on the iconic Town Hall stage, and their debut at The Big Sing. One of the standout moments was their joyful interpretation of Philip Norman’s setting of Margaret Mahy’s Tarragon Vinegar, complete with kazoos.

CHESS

This week, the Chess A team of Cayden Wang, James Anthony (both Year 13), Alex Manson (Year 12) and Anthony Song (Year 10) emerged as the overall winners of the Regional Interschool Chess Tournament, beating the second-best school, Burnside High School, in a tiebreak. This means they have once again qualified for Nationals, which this year will be held in Christchurch. Worth noting is Anthony Song’s performance, with five victories and zero losses. The B team also did well, finishing in third place.

BASKETBALL

The Years 5–8 ISSA Basketball Tournament at MainPower Stadium provided an exciting afternoon on Monday, as teams vied for a chance to represent our zone at the Canterbury Indoor Tournament. The girls' competitions were particularly intense, with several closely contested matches. Meanwhile, the Year 7–8 Boys’ and Year 5–6 Boys’ teams delivered dominant performances, securing their victories with a clear margin over second place. The Year 7–8 Girls’ team put in significant effort to earn their first-place finish, demonstrating resilience throughout the tournament. The Year 5–6 Girls’ team faced an unusual outcome, finishing in a tie for first place, but being placed third due to a countback on point differential. Overall, the tournament was a great success, highlighting excellent sportsmanship, strong values, and impressive basketball skills from all participants.

CONFERENCE PRESENTER

At the end of last month, Chief Information Officer, Dave Hart, was invited to present at the AISNSW ICT Management and Leadership Conference in Sydney – Australia’s premier event for ICT and education professionals in the independent school sector. This year’s theme, ‘Digital Directions,’ focused on how schools can strategically balance immediate ICT needs with long-term innovation and security. In his presentation, Dave shared St Andrew’s College’s digital transformation journey, including:

  • the College’s transition from Synergetic to Veracross as our new student information system and parent portal platform;
  • a pilot of Toddle to potentially replace Microsoft Teams in teaching and learning;
  • the adoption of a new HR and payroll system;
  • our potential move toward a modern data platform using Microsoft Fabric;
  • the challenges of implementing such projects in New Zealand compared with Australia.

These projects reflect the College’s commitment to delivering a seamless, future-focused digital experience for students, staff, and families. While wide-ranging, they are grounded in careful planning, strong vendor partnerships, and a clear vision of what digital excellence entails in a New Zealand independent school context.
