Rector's Comment

Friday 6 March 2026

Dear Parents and Caregivers

Last Friday evening, we held a very special naming ceremony for two new rowing boats. This included a new eight boat named The Legacy, part-funded through a parent-led initiative by Sami Chesterton and the Cardrona Whisky Legacy Group. The second boat, a pair, was named in honour of Ben Taylor (OC2017), a highly successful Old Collegian rower. Ben was a member of St Andrew’s College’s 2017 Maadi Cup-winning Eight and has since achieved international success, including gold at the 2025 World Rowing Championships. Judi and I are now travelling to Twizel to support our young rowers competing at the annual South Island Schools Championship at Lake Ruataniwha this weekend.

Last weekend also offered a glimpse of the ‘secret magic’ behind the scenes work taking place at Living Springs, where performers and musicians rehearsed for this year’s Senior College production, Anything Goes. It was a pleasure to see the energy, collaboration, and talent of our performing arts students as they worked together on this musical comedy. Anything Goes will be on stage from Sunday 3 to Friday 8 May, with tickets on sale from the end of next week.

On Monday, we held our first StACTalk for the year, with Jehan Casinader speaking to Year 11–13 students during the school day, followed by an evening session for parents and staff. Jehan shared a powerful well‑being message focused on the importance of the stories we tell ourselves, and how more hopeful internal narratives can positively influence performance, well‑being, and workplace culture.

Thank you to everyone who supported our annual Open Days this week. With around 1000 people registered for our Secondary School Open Day and 500 for the Preparatory School, it is very humbling to see such strong and growing interest in St Andrew’s College.

As we move into March, the College begins its annual fundraising focus for So They Can, our overseas charity partner for the past three years. This organisation supports young women in Kenya and Tanzania to access education and avoid practices that limit their choices and future opportunities. A key focus for Secondary School tutor groups will be fundraising through The 1 Human Race challenge, encouraging participants to run, walk, or cycle 65km across the month to support this cause.

March will also see the introduction of a change to co‑curricular uniforms. Following a selection process last year, St Andrew’s College has entered a new three‑year partnership with Dynasty as our co‑curricular uniform provider. This partnership enables a refreshed and consistent uniform design across co‑curricular activities in both the Preparatory and Secondary Schools.

Ngā mihi

Inspiring Teaching – the Science of Learning and the Art of Teaching

Classroom practice, learning programmes, academic initiatives, and learning outcomes

YEAR 13 STATISTICS

The annual Experiments Day for Year 13 Statistics students was held on Tuesday in the Senior College. Across four periods, students led and participated in a range of experiments designed to test psychological theories and hypotheses.

Several investigations focused on learning, including whether music influences concentration and whether awareness of others’ performance affects motivation. Other experiments explored anchoring and how rational people are when estimating quantities. Students will now analyse their results, present their findings, and complete written research reports.

YEAR 12 MOUNTAIN BIKING

Year 12 NCEA Physical Education students have been applying classroom theory in real‑world contexts through mountain biking sessions at McLeans Island, linked to their Risk Management and Practical Performance assessments. Students researched, developed, and implemented safety and risk‑management strategies to address both physical and psychological risks associated with the environment.

Strategies included the use of a buddy system, appropriate equipment selection, and environmental checks, which were particularly important following earlier wet weather. The programme also included a 5km time trial around the Coringa Loop, providing a practical performance component alongside reflective learning.

CHINESE NEW YEAR

Tuesday marked the conclusion of the Chinese New Year celebrations. While noodle‑making planned for Monday was postponed to next week, students took part in a colouring activity in the library, selecting animals from the Chinese Zodiac. The session provided a calm, mindful opportunity to engage with cultural learning and enjoy a creative break indoors.

FRENCH

This week marked the conclusion of exchange student Anton Fontana’s time at St Andrew’s College, as he returned to Canada after joining the Year 11 French class since the beginning of the year. Anton shared insights into his home region of Québec, including language features and cultural expressions.

On Thursday, he presented to the class about regional cuisine, introducing students to poutine – a dish of fries, gravy, and cheese curds. The class explored this cultural difference further by sampling poutine together on Friday as part of their learning.

YEAR 8 LEARNING EXPERIENCE

Over the past fortnight, Year 8 students visited Halswell Quarry for a hands‑on learning experience, Rocky Road of Discovery. Students investigated the geological processes that shaped Banks Peninsula and learned about the historical uses of the quarry.

The programme included building dry‑stone walls, which were thoroughly tested for strength, and exploring local Māori history through learning about the use of swamplands and native plants for food, healing, and daily life. The experience supported scientific understanding while deepening place‑based and cultural knowledge.

YEAR 2 PHYSICAL EDUCATION

Year 2 students have begun their Junior Department Athletics unit, focusing this week on accurate underarm throwing and sprinting technique. Working with Head of Physical Education Isaac Leota, students explored how to throw with control by using a smooth underarm action and aiming accurately at a target.

The session then shifted to sprinting fundamentals, including arm movement, posture, and running in a straight line. Short sprints and relay races provided opportunities to practise technique while encouraging teamwork and effort. Three StAC‑Up Detectives supported the lesson by identifying examples of positive behaviour, safety, and collaboration.

During the session, George Williams (Year 2) presented Arcadya Evans (Year 2) with a StAC‑Up token for demonstrating exceptional safety during sprinting practice. The unit supports physical skill development alongside perseverance, cooperation, and reflection on learning.

Well-being for All – Growing and caring for our people

Well‑being, inclusion, care, connection, and pastoral or whānau‑focused initiatives

STACTALKS: THE POWER OF STORIES WITH JEHAN CASINADER

On Monday, award‑winning journalist Jehan Casinader spoke to Year 11–13 students, followed by an evening presentation attended by more than 250 parents and caregivers, as part of the StACTalks well‑being series. Jehan shared a powerful and deeply personal message, exploring outward success alongside his experience of severe depression, and the role storytelling played in rebuilding hope, identity, and well‑being.

Drawing on his life experience, Jehan invited the audience to reflect on several key ideas: that what happens to us is often less influential than the story we tell about it; that sharing our stories with trusted people strengthens connection; and that distress is part of being human rather than a defining identity. He spoke about resilience as the ability to recognise unhelpful narratives and consciously choose more hopeful, empowering ones, encouraging students to ask, “How can I tell a different story with the same facts?” His message concluded with a reminder to remain engaged in one’s own story, even during difficult chapters.

Jehan’s presentation aligned closely with the College’s approach to well‑being, reinforcing the importance of shared language, reflection, and role models in supporting student growth and resilience.

BOAT NAMING

Last Friday, the rowing club held a boat‑naming ceremony outside Strowan House following the arrival of a new Hudson eight and pair from Canada. Those in attendance included Mark and Judi Wilson, Rev. Paul Morrow who blessed both boats, past and present parents, and members of the Senior rowing team.

The eight, named The Legacy, was funded in part through a parent‑led fundraising initiative by the Cardrona Whisky Legacy Group, established and managed by former parent Sami Chesterton, who unveiled the name. Head of Values and Culture Hamish Bell, who has been involved with rowing at the College since 2012, reflected on the growth of the programme from a small group of 22 rowers with one eight to a programme now comprising eight eights and an average of 80 rowers, with equal participation by boys and girls. The name The Legacy reflects the sustained growth and strength of rowing at St Andrew’s College.

The pair was named in honour of Old Collegian Ben Taylor (OC 2017), a recent World Rowing Champion. While Ben was unable to attend due to New Zealand trials, he shared a message read by his mother, Anna, expressing gratitude for the opportunities and support he received during his time rowing at the College. His words resonated strongly with the current squad.
