Cancer Society Daffodil Day – Friday 29 August (tomorrow)

Tomorrow, on Friday 29 August, the Preparatory School will be acknowledging Daffodil Day, a special initiative led by Cancer Society NZ to raise awareness and support for New Zealanders affected by cancer. Daffodil Day is a symbol of hope, strength, and unity. Every daffodil worn or dollar donated helps fund vital research, provide free support services, and promote cancer prevention across Aotearoa.

To show our support, we invite students to come to school wearing a touch of yellow alongside their regular school uniform. This could be:

  • a daffodil pin or flower;
  • yellow socks;
  • a yellow hair ribbon.

Let’s brighten the day with a splash of yellow and stand together for a cause that touches so many lives. If you’d like to make a donation to Cancer Society NZ, you can do so online by clicking here. Thank you for helping us support this important cause.

Grandparents’ Day (Term 4, Week 1) – Friday 17 October, 10.40am, Centennial Chapel

The registration form is open for our annual Grandparents' Day. All visitors need to register to attend. This will ensure that the children are released from class to meet with them. Please register grandparents for this special day by clicking here

2026 Class Placements

We plan to place the children in their 2026 classes before the end of this term. Please note staffing for next year is not yet finalised and there will be some changes. The process is same as last year:

  1. Your child's current teacher (Years 1–7) is the contact point for any information you would like to be considered.
    Please submit information via email only.
  2. Only submit information that you consider crucial or new. For most children, the classroom teachers will be able to make informed and appropriate choices.
  3. Restrict your information to one consideration. More than one consideration or requesting a specific teacher will not be able to be met. If suggesting friendship considerations, please give three possible connections, and we will endeavour to accommodate one.
  4. The closing date for receipt of information is Friday 12 September

This year, the teachers will again use a computer program to assist the process. At each year level, the teachers will work together to enter the information (their own plus other sources i.e. parents, learning support, pastoral support, etc.) and the program will generate the class lists. The College's database does not have the facility to compile future classes, so to have an option that doesn't allow double entries or missed names is helpful and quicker.

StACTalk Café: Technology, Smartphones and Well-being

We held our second StACTalk Café morning on Tuesday, bringing parents of Year 7–8 students together to discuss technology, smartphones, and student well-being. Our leadership and Guidance teams led the session, with Preparatory School representatives joining the conversation.

Many parents shared feeling overwhelmed by today's digital challenges, similar to what we heard in last week's discussion. The conversation highlighted common struggles families face with technology, especially as children move from Preparatory to Secondary School.

The group came up with some practical ideas:

  • drop-in tutorials at school to help parents set up and use parental control apps;
  • a dedicated Facebook group where parents can share technology strategies and continue discussions;
  • the use of mobile phone family agreements to set clear boundaries.

Parents shared what is working in their own homes to manage screentime, offering real-world approaches that have been successful for their families. Everyone agreed that consistent boundaries are particularly important during the transition to Secondary School.

Based on the feedback from this session, we will be sending paper copies of our Mobile Phone Family Agreement template to all families in Years 7–8 next week. We hope this will help start meaningful conversations about responsible technology use at home.

Thank you to everyone who participated in this valuable discussion. We look forward to our final Café talk next week, details below:

CHESS

Earlier this month, five Preparatory School students (Jack Blyde, Seth Clenshaw, Mason Eastmure, Alfred Lash, and Vitek Mencl (all Year 7)) attended the Canterbury Interschool Individual Chess Competition, along with some Secondary School students. The players rose to the challenge throughout the day, enjoying a few wins and weathering the losses! It was encouraging to see the support the Secondary School students gave their younger counterparts throughout the day, making lasting connections.

SKIING

On Tuesday, 33 Preparatory School students travelled to Porters Alpine Resort for the annual Independent Schools’ Ski Race. The group was treated to a bluebird day, making it the perfect setting for a fun and competitive day on the slopes. In the Primary Co-educational Years 1–6 team category, Isabelle Turnbull (Year 4), India Chima (Year 5), Fletcher Adair and Isabel Ellis (both Year 6) raced superbly to take first place. Olivia Han (Year 4), Violet Winterbourn, Georgia Blyde, and Jack Marsh (all Year 5) also performed strongly, finishing in third place.

In the Intermediate Co-educational Years 7–8 team category, George Turnbull (Year 8), Lucia Patterson, Lucas Chima, and Luke Russell (all Year 7) claimed second place, while Millicent Brown (Year 8), Izzy Every, William Keir, and Sophie Jacobs (all Year 7) followed closely in third place.

There were also some fantastic individual results: India Chima (Year 5) was the fastest Year 1–6 girl; Alfred Keir (Year 5) was the fastest Year 1–6 boy; Millicent Brown (Year 8) was the fastest Year 7–8 girl.

SWIMMING

Kelicia Rui En Purcell (Year 8) competed in the South Island Short Course Swimming Championships in Blenheim last weekend in the 12–14 age group. Kelicia swam well, achieving multiple Personal Bests, and placing in the top five in all but two events. Her 200m Butterfly time of 2:34.35 was the fastest of all female ages, which earned her the Overall South Island Champion title. Kelicia earned the following top three results: 1st – 100m Butterfly; 1st – 200m Butterfly, 1st – 400m Individual Medley; 2nd – 200m Individual Medley.

BALLET

Cynthia Zhang (Year 4) successfully auditioned to perform in the upcoming Christchurch season of the Royal New Zealand Ballet's The Nutcracker. This is a wonderful opportunity, with Cynthia one of 14 dancers chosen in Christchurch from a very strong group of dancers, who can only audition if at a very high level of ballet.

St Andrew’s College Preparatory School families are warmly invited to join the final Eco Action community planting day at Chimera and Atlantis Street this Sunday (10.00am–12.00pm). Students will help plant 5000 native trees and plants they have grown, contributing to a total of 20,000 across four events. This initiative supports biodiversity, provides habitat for native species, and helps sequester carbon.

Please bring drinking water, sturdy footwear, and a spade if you have one (400 will be available on site). The event promises a great atmosphere with students, parents, and community groups from across Christchurch. For more information, visit eco-action.co.nz.
