Term 2 Week 8

Kia ora koutou

While I have mentioned this previously, I do want to again acknowledge what a tremendous success our Looped production has been, with the final performance taking place yesterday. We have been so impressed by the calibre of the performances and the commitment shown by our Year 7–8 ākonga. It has been outstanding and highlights one of the many strengths and opportunities our ākonga experience at St Andrew’s College. We look forward to next week’s article from Director and Producer, Ginnie Thorner, which will showcase the production in more detail and acknowledge the contributions of staff, parents, and ākonga.

It has been a full and exciting time across the school this past week. Our younger ākonga enjoyed being hosted by the Year 13 prefects at the Years 2–3 Disco on Friday 12 June, with impressive dance moves matched by the energy and enthusiasm of our prefects and Junior Department staff. Our Year 6–8 classes are also looking forward to attending the Prefect Assembly on Friday 26 June, providing a valuable opportunity to connect with Secondary School leaders and gain insight into leadership at the next stage of schooling.

Looking ahead, mid-year reports will be shared with families at the end of Week 1, Term 3, on Friday 24 July, with Parent-Teacher Conferences scheduled for 27–29 July. These reports reflect progress in relation to the refreshed New Zealand Curriculum, using the progress levels Emerging, Developing, Consolidating, Proficient, and Exceeding.

As you will see in the image below, at the beginning of the year many ākonga were working within the Emerging stage as new content is introduced. By mid-year, ākonga have typically moved through the Emerging stage as their understanding and confidence have developed, with many working within the Consolidating or Proficient stages.

As previously communicated, the refreshed curriculum introduces clearer and more structured expectations across year levels. For example, recalling multiplication and division facts for 2s, 5s and 10s, previously introduced at Year 4 level, is now introduced in Year 2. Similarly, recalling all multiplication and division facts up to the 10 times tables, once an expectation at Year 6, is now introduced in Year 4. These shifts reflect the increased expectations within the curriculum. As a result, some ākonga may be consolidating or revisiting earlier concepts to strengthen these foundations.

Our teaching staff continue to work closely together to build their understanding of the refreshed curriculum and ensure consistency in how ākonga progress is assessed.

It has also been an exciting time on the sporting front. The StAC Rugby Club Day on Saturday 13 June was a fantastic community event, culminating in our 1st XV being accompanied onto the field by our Junior Rippa Rugby team. We were thrilled with the 1st XV’s success against St Thomas of Canterbury College, and the day was a wonderful celebration of sport and connection.

The Canterbury Primary Schools Cross Country Championships were held yesterday, Wednesday 17 June, at Ngā Puna Wai. Congratulations to Franklin Rahman in Year 7, who won his race and placed first in the Year 7 Open category. We also acknowledge the top 10 finishes achieved by Theo Nelson in Year 6, Clara Jones in Year 7, and ChloeAnn Botha in Year 8, as well as the efforts by the other 10 St Andrew's runners. These are outstanding achievements for our ākonga and we are so incredibly proud of them!

It has also been exciting to follow the success of New Zealand teams on the world stage, including the Black Sticks women at the National Cup, and we wish the All Whites all the best as we cheer them on in their World Cup campaign.

Black and White Day Monday 22 June | Supporting the All Whites

To support our national team, the 'All Whites', the Preparatory School is excited to announce a 'Black and White Day' this coming Monday, 22 June!

The All Whites are playing their second pool game against Egypt at 1.00pm, and this will be the final match taking place during school hours before the tournament moves into the weekend and holiday period. Let’s make the most of this opportunity to show our support as a school community.

We encourage all students to come dressed in black and/or white to get behind the team. This could include:

*  black and white clothing (please note this is not a free casual day unless it fits the theme); or
*  school uniform with a 'touch' of black or white flair.

Let’s create a sea of black and white across the Preparatory School and build some real atmosphere ahead of kickoff!

With inspiring All Whites such as Tim Payne, Elijah Just, and Chris Wood leading the charge, it’s a great moment to rally together and celebrate football on the world stage. We hope the boys can continue their campaign strongly, and we’ll be right behind them!

Thank you for your support in making this a fun and spirited occasion.

Inspiring Teaching – the Science of Learning and the Art of Teaching

Classroom practice, learning programmes, academic initiatives, and learning outcomes

Year 4 Mathematics

Year 4 students enjoyed a hands-on Mathematics lesson where they explored 3D shapes by constructing their own models using toothpicks and marshmallows. Working collaboratively, the students built a variety of shapes such as cubes, pyramids, and prisms, using the toothpicks as edges and marshmallows as vertices. This engaging activity helped deepen their understanding of geometry as they identified and described the faces, edges, and vertices of each shape they created. It was wonderful to see the enthusiasm and creativity on display, with students confidently using mathematical vocabulary while learning through play.

Well-being for All

Well‑being, inclusion, care, connection, and pastoral or whānau‑focused initiatives

StACTalks: Digital Well-Being, Connection, and Identity

On Tuesday evening, over 120 parents attended our annual StACTalk on Digital Well-being, with a strong focus on supporting our students to develop a healthy, balanced approach to technology.

To see the handout shared on St Andrew's philosophy for best supporting technology use, please click here.

The evening highlighted the importance of the Preparatory School years as a “training wheels” stage – a time to build positive habits, set clear boundaries, and guide children before they move into more independent digital use. Insights from Head of Guidance, Tom Matthews, and Head of Well-being, Kerry Larby, reinforced the connection between technology, brain development, and well-being, while Head of Middle School, Matt Parr, outlined how digital issues can emerge in later years, underscoring the value of getting the early foundations right.

Preparatory School Deputy Principal, Vicki Pettit, shared encouraging progress from the Hold the Line ‘til Year 9 initiative. With close to half of our Preparatory students now covered by the pledge, we are seeing fewer online-related issues impacting school life and a growing sense of shared responsibility across our community. At the same time, ongoing challenges – particularly around sleep and evening device use – remain an important focus for families.

A consistent message throughout the evening was the importance of partnership. Simple, practical steps – such as establishing clear family agreements, keeping devices out of bedrooms, and maintaining open conversations – can make a significant difference.

Development remains at the forefront of our practice. Around the world, there is growing recognition of the need for thoughtful boundaries that support young people to grow with confidence and clarity. This aligns strongly with our approach at St Andrew’s: promoting free, unstructured play, modelling balanced technology use, and introducing social media gradually and intentionally – ideally not before age 16, and delaying smartphones until at least Year 9.

This global momentum reinforces our Hold the Line ‘til Year 9 initiative, which continues to gain strong support within our community. We encourage all Preparatory School families to consider joining this collective commitment, helping our young people build healthy habits, maintain focus, and thrive.

Please note, a video recording of this StACTalks session will be shared with all parents/caregivers via email.

Hold the Line Update

We now have close to 50% of ākonga signed up to Hold the Line ‘til Year 9, representing 14 classes with an active pledge. Three further classes – 4S, 2T and 7T – are just a small number of families away from activating their pledge.

If you would like to learn more, please contact Vicki Pettit at VPE@stac.school.nz, or read more and sign the pledge via the link below.

Year 8 Well-being

This term, our Year 8 classes have been exploring the PERMA-V well-being framework, unpacking what each element represents and reflecting on how these ideas connect to our own lives. Students have contributed thoughtfully, leading to meaningful and engaging classroom discussions. A particular focus has been placed on the role of positive emotions. As part of this learning, students created their own gratitude jars. Families, friends, coaches, and teachers were invited to contribute short positive messages, which students added to their jars. In Week 9 and continuing into next term, students will begin a daily practice of selecting and reading one message to themselves, providing regular moments of encouragement and positive self-reflection. Class discussions have been guided by questions such as: How do positive emotions support learning and relationships? How can we create more positive moments in our daily lives? These conversations have helped students to consider practical ways to strengthen their well-being.

Overall, this learning has encouraged students to recognise the importance of positivity, connection, and reflection in their lives. We look forward to continuing to build on these insights next term, supporting students to develop habits that promote both resilience and a strong sense of well-being.

CPSSA Cross Country

The Canterbury Primary Schools (CPSSA) Cross Country Championships was held at Ngā Puna Wai on Wednesday in extremely challenging conditions, with freezing temperatures and strong winds testing all competitors. Qualifying for this event is a significant achievement in itself. Students were required to finish in the top six at their zone competitions to earn selection, so all participants should be proud of reaching this level. Each race featured between 120 and 130 runners, highlighting the depth and quality of competition across the region.

A special congratulations to Franklin Rahman (Year 7), who delivered an outstanding performance to win his race and placed first in the Year 7 Open category.

Top 10 finishes were also achieved by:

  • Theo Nelson (Year 6) – 6th
  • Clara Jones (Year 7) – 7th
  • ChloeAnn Botha (Year 8) – 10th

Full results are available by clicking here.

These placings are excellent results given the size and strength of the fields. Well done to all students who competed. Performing under such difficult weather conditions required resilience and determination, and all athletes represented their schools with pride.

Community and Partnership

Years 2–3 Disco

Our Years 2–3 Disco, held on Friday 12 June, was a joyful celebration of connection and inclusion, wonderfully led by our Year 13 prefects. The disco theme was ‘In the Garden,’ with the Junior Department’s Learning Hallway transformed into an enchanting space filled with creative costumes, including bugs, birds, vegetables, and gardeners. Students danced enthusiastically, showed off some impressive moves, and cheered each other on in a fun class dance-off. Bringing our younger and most senior students together in this way fostered a strong sense of belonging, whānau connection, and pastoral care, highlighting the importance of shared experiences in nurturing our school community.

Road Patrol and Safety Reminders

Each school term, Constable Richard Brunton provides the new St Andrew’s College Road Patrol recruits with the training needed to manage the road patrol area safely. The lesson starts with theory in a classroom, before heading out and practicing on the road. Students must pass both the theory and practical components to become a certified road patroller. Like every new road patroller, they are excited to be providing this valuable service to the school and to the community.

How can you help?

  • abide by the road rules;
  • when operating a vehicle, stick to a speed of 30KM or less during peak times;
  • do not park on yellow lines or park across driveways;
  • if within 20M of the crossing, please use it – it’s there to keep you safe.

Road Patrol Hours

  • Morning
    • Monday – Friday: 8.00am–8.30am.
  • Afternoons
    • Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday: 3.15pm–3.35pm;

World Vision 40-Hour Challenge | 19–21 June

Preparatory School students are invited to take part in this year’s World Vision 40-Hour Challenge, from Friday 19 to Sunday 21 June. Together we can make a difference.

During the challenge, students are encouraged to go offline for 40 hours – stepping away from devices including phones, gaming, and social media. Alternatively, they can set a personal goal that is meaningful and achievable to be sponsored for. This year’s challenge supports the people of the Solomon Islands, who are being greatly affected by rising sea levels.

Participating students can collect a sponsorship booklet from their classroom teacher, to then seek support from family and friends. Students will need to record the names of sponsors and then track pledges and donations.
